San Gimignano and Chianti

My one free weekend in Italy consisted of a day trip to Pisa, San Gimignano and Siena.

The ride to San Gimignano was great because we could see the beautiful Italian countryside. There were tons of vineyards, olive trees and sunflower fields.

They also fed us, which was great. We went to a nice indoor/outdoor restaurant called Trattoria. We had pasta, bread and were given wine. Lots of wine. Entire bottles of wine, 4 bottles per section of 4-6 people. We didn’t go wild, but we definitely appreciated the chance to try a wide variety of wines and especially to try Chianti IN Chianti!

After lunch we went to the medieval town of San Gimignano. This town is known for it’s medieval skyscrapers and architecture.

In San Gimignano there is a small gelateria that claims to have the best ice cream in the entire world! The line to try and see if they were, in fact, the best in the world was really long, so they’re definitely popular, at least with tourists trying to get a taste of the best ice cream.

I tried it and it was tasty. Seeing as I haven’t tried all of the ice cream in the world I’m in no position to say if it’s true or not, but I’m willing to do what it  takes to find out.
